Age-Related Diseases Might be overcome with Resveratrol
Resveratrol research is starting to show evidence that inflammation may be overcome with resveratrol, a natural compound found in red grape skins, Japanese Goat Weed, and a number of other natural plant sources. This is important because resveratrol exerts, as shown in research data, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects in vitro and also in animal studies. It has also been found that resveratrol’s actions are thought to be controlled by increasing sirtuin-1, a gene involved with longevity.
The importance of the resveratrol research was brought out when an article was published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. The article linked some major diseases with the danger of inflammation.
A form of heart disease, Ischemic heart disease, has been found to be connected to inflammation of the inner lining of the coronary arteries. This form of inflammation can cause a heart attack and is associated with the plaque found in the arterial lining. When resveratrol is ingested as a supplement, it has been found to clean the artery walls of the plaque.
Retina cell degeneration has been found to be related to inflammation. This is a condition normally referred to as age-related macular degeneration. Data generated by a number of research studies has brought attention to abnormalities in the complement cascade which creates a situation promoting an inflammatory condition. It has been found that if a patient has new visual distortion of a central black spot, the patient should receive immediate attention as this indicates a condition often referred to as wet type of macular degeneration. This is where unnatural blood vessels have formed in the retina and this condition has been treated with resveratrol.
The degenerative disease, diabetes, has been found to be associated with inflammation. This brings on a condition where the body’s insulin is not effective or is not produced in the proper amounts as needed by the body. Diabetes is a degenerative disease commonly thought to cause an increase in stroke, blindness, kidney disease and heart attack.
A study was conducted by Kaleida Health’s Diabetes Endocrinology Center of Western New York. The study was designed to use ten subjects and have them ingest nutritional supplements. Each supplement contained 40mg of resveratrol or a placebo; both the resveratrol and placebo were identical in appearance. Each subject ingested their capsule once per day. To track progress in the study, fasting blood samples were collected in the beginning of the study as well as in weeks three and six. Data collected from the blood samples showed that resveratrol reduced the creation of free radicals. This was important because free radicals are unstable molecules that cause oxidative stress, releasing conditions causing inflammation in the blood stream. Free radicals are also considered to be the cause of damage to blood vessels and also acted to promote the development of angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels for tumors).
More research is needed to fully understand how resveratrol can overcome inflammation. This will lead to overcoming the degenerative diseases and improve our health as we age.
