Resveratrol has Significant Impact on Human Intelligence
Earlier research studies on resveratrol have explored many different areas of human health. But, it has been quietly and openly suggested that this natural compound could have an impact on the cognitive processes of the human brain. The University of Northumbria in the UK has completed a study which has produced data supporting the influence of resveratrol on the brain.
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition recently published an article on this study. The article’s author presents the study’s conclusion as only a small dose of resveratrol is required to change the cerebral blood flow to the frontal cortex of the brain and can increase the blood flow when a task activity requires it.
The study design was a double-blind, peer-reviewed study. There were two groups; one group of eleven healthy adults received two doses of resveratrol, (250mg & 500mg) per day in counterbalanced order on separate days. The second group, eleven healthy adults, received placebo each day. Study design required a resting period for the body to absorb the resveratrol & placebo. When that was completed, each group had a number of cognitive exercises which were designed to activate the frontal cortex of the brain for a period of 36 minutes. Measurements were then taken and calculated to find changes in concentration by oxygenated and deoxygenated haemoglobin found in the frontal cortex during the post treatment period by using near-infrared spectroscopy.
Data produced by the measurements using the near-infrared spectroscopy shocked the research team as the results were amazing. Data showed members of the resveratrol team showed an increase in cerebral blood flow when carrying out the cognitive exercises. After receiving both doses of resveratrol, deoxyhaemoglobin indicated there was a substantial increase of extracted oxygen by the process. Cognitive function was not affected, but it has set the conditions necessary for further research on this subject.
An interesting result in the study was that resveratrol did not just produce one main conclusion but, in reality, several important points. First, resveratrol’s vasodilation effect appears to be controlled or put into action by the brain when an increase in blood flow is required for more difficult exercises. The influence of resveratrol on the blood flow to the frontal cortex of the brain is getting a great deal of attention. This is because resveratrol responds to an increase in demand very quickly after ingestion of this natural compound and it follows that the increase in blood responds by increasing as needed.
The research project conducted by the University of Northumbria has set the stage for resveratrol supplements possibly being used to increase cognitive function and accelerate blood flow to the brain. This opens the door for more research in this area. This data really brings out the fact we still know very little about this remarkable compound. No known toxic effects have been found in any of the research conducted to date. Whereas, it has demonstrated an amazing number of ways that resveratrol impacts our health in a positive manner.
