Resveratrol and Neuroblastoma Cancer

Neuroblastoma is a frightening cancer and before we get into the details of this research project, let me give you a quick description of this cancer.  Neuroblastoma is a malignant tumor composed of neuroblasts, originating in the autonomic nervous system or the adrenal medulla and occurring chiefly in infants and young children.

When a patient is diagnosed as having neuroblastoma the prognosis or forecast of treatment is not good. The object of this study was to develop an effective treatment strategy. Resveratrol, a natural polyphenol, has shown chemopreventive and anti-tumor qualities.  The scientists wanted to investigate the effects of resveratrol on the proliferation, apoptosis, and cell cycle alteration of neuroblastoma cells. They used groups of mice to determine the effects of neuroblastoma tumors in the mice. Read the rest of this entry »

Resveratrol’s Chemopreventive Capacity

Nothing strikes as much fear in a person’s heart than the threat of Cancer, and that threat only gets worse as we age. In the past three years, a significant amount of attention has been given to the Chemopreventive capacity of resveratrol. This attention has already led to significant findings; as an example, a group of biologists have discovered that the most active form of the molecule, trans-resveratrol, causes human breast cancer cells to commit apoptosis (suicide). This is one of the most important and effective ways of treating cancer. It is also a very effective way of stopping the progression of the disease to other parts of the body. Researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center found they could use resveratrol  to stop damage to DNA being caused by excess estrogen; successfully stopping the initiation of some breast cancers.
