Discussion of Cancer and Quercetin

Does quercetin really prevent cancer? That is one of the big questions and there is no quick answer. The amount of research being done on quercetin is amazing and it has opened totally new areas that science is investigating, and this gives many reasons to question what is being done. But what most people, especially lay persons, do not understand is that our knowledge and understanding of the new areas being investigated is going to grow. This research will bring many surprises and some disappointments All of this goes with our becoming better educated, so you should not become overly negative as you read this article. Resveratrol and Neuroblastoma Cancer

Neuroblastoma is a frightening cancer and before we get into the details of this research project, let me give you a quick description of this cancer.  Neuroblastoma is a malignant tumor composed of neuroblasts, originating in the autonomic nervous system or the adrenal medulla and occurring chiefly in infants and young children.

When a patient is diagnosed as having neuroblastoma the prognosis or forecast of treatment is not good. The object of this study was to develop an effective treatment strategy. Resveratrol, a natural polyphenol, has shown chemopreventive and anti-tumor qualities.  The scientists wanted to investigate the effects of resveratrol on the proliferation, apoptosis, and cell cycle alteration of neuroblastoma cells. They used groups of mice to determine the effects of neuroblastoma tumors in the mice. Read the rest of this entry »

Resveratrol Demonstrates Power

Resveratrol’s amazing power to prevent or reverse damage from a cardiovascular event is substantiated by the many animal studies conducted by many different research groups around the world. Canadian researchers found resveratrol could reduce rat cardiac cell hypertrophy, by blocking inflammatory signals. This was the success achieved by a group of Korean scientist using resveratrol to defend heart cells from free radical caused death. Chinese cardiologists used resveratrol to avoid death of rat cardiac cells by activating sirtuin enzymes, thus preventing the remodeling of heart muscle contributing to congestive heart failure after a heart attack. These results are being obtained by many labs around the world. Read the rest of this entry »
