Quercetin: Anti-Obesity

Obesity is rapidly becoming one of Earth’s major global health problems. Quercetin has captured the interest of obesity research as they are exploring quercetin’s potential as a method to control fat accumulation.

Research is showing this flavonoid can by itself or in combination with resveratrol and genistein exerts multiple effects directly on fat tissue. Accumulating fat in aging human fat cells is restricted in culture. Aging of new fat cells will stop and immediately start apoptosis (the programmed destruction of existing fat cells). The intake of glucose from the blood will be blocked preventing fat cells from receiving fresh raw materials needed to produce and collect fat molecules. Read the rest of this entry »

Quercetin has Anti-atherogenic effect

A new study has disclosed that the bioflavonoid quercetin plays a role in controlling a gene which protects LDL cholesterol oxidation.

Gene Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) takes care of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol from being involved in the oxidation process. The heart is protected from the oxidation process of LDL by the role PON1 plays by blocking cholesterol’s heart damaging process. PON1 is a major anti-atherosclerotic protein component of the positive cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Read the rest of this entry »
