Resveratrol and Dr. Sinclair’s Contributions

This morning I found a short abstract of an article written by Dr. David Sinclair.  Dr. Sinclair is with the Department of Pathology, Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA.

Dr. Sinclair is best known for the research he has completed on resveratrol and its ability to extend life. He started with a number of yeast strains and used them to explore the hypotheses concerning calorie restriction (CR).
He notes that calorie restriction was considered the most reproducible way to extend the life span of mammals, and was also used to explain its impact as a passive alteration in the metabolism. Read the rest of this entry »

Evolution of Resveratrol’s Research

In 1997, Dr. Sinclair discovered new strains of yeast that had a very long life span. His discovery of extended longevity happened because a gene called sir2 had experienced starvation, and the gene mediated the extension of life. This was a major step forward to validate caloric restriction. This caused resveratrol to be considered the most effective stimulator of sirtuin enzymes, Scientists adopted the notion that the anti-aging enzymes, sirtuin enzymes are the universal regulators of aging in virtually all living organisms. Dr. Sinclair’s group successfully demonstrated, at that time, they could tweak the sirtuin pathway.  They accomplished this by screening a number of biologically active compounds and found several compounds they tested could be easily made into a drug.
